I am an architect specializing in consulting on the exterior of buildings to keep them safe and dry. I am a hands-on and boots-on-the-ground architect who has spent most of my career in the field where I’ve learned how to build, both the right and sometimes, wrong ways. For the last 25 years, I have always kept at least one foot in the trenches. Working in the field, watching buildings get built, has helped me become a better architect who thrives working on details.
My main specialty over the last 20 years has been focusing on roofing and waterproofing of building exteriors. Deeper in the niche service of roofing consulting, I find much of my time spent working on leak investigations. Leak investigations are a hands-on series of testing possible deficiencies in the exterior of the building to understand what needs to be repaired and therefore solve the leak. By learning where water comes into buildings, it helps me to design details that have redundancy and therefore have a better chance of staying dry.
There is the world of paper where the details work perfectly, and then there is the real world where unforeseen conditions arise, and the details don’t work. In these scenarios, a good waterproofing consultant can add value to a project.
During construction, it’s important to have a second set of eyes to make sure that the contractors have someone that they can rely on to help them with field conditions that might not have been planned for. It’s the roofing consultant’s role to help contractors identify and solve these problems for the good of the project. In the end, we want to be on the same team with the contractors so that owners can get quality work that will last for decades.
